Viola, Composer, Producer

John Metcalfe

John Metcalfe is a composer, producer, and string arranger whose work occupies the space between classical composition and electronic production. A trained violist and founding member of the Duke Quartet, Metcalfe has built a body of work that moves between ambient, electronic, and orchestral contexts — always with a composer’s sense of structure and a producer’s ear for texture.

His solo recordings layer strings, electronics, and field recordings into compositions that are spacious and precisely constructed. The classical training is audible in the harmonic language and the way phrases breathe; the electronic influence shows in the production — the careful use of space, processing, and rhythm that gives his music its contemporary feel. Albums include Tree and The Appearance of Colour, both on Real World Records.

Metcalfe has also worked extensively as an arranger and orchestrator for other artists, contributing string arrangements to recordings by Peter Gabriel, Coldplay, Blur, Sam Smith, and Morrissey, among others. His compositional work for film and media extends his reach beyond the concert stage.
